Mac os Lion Compatibility for developers
I’ve just migrated to Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion). Here’s what worked and what failed on OS X Lion:
Flash Builder 4.5:
Java runtime needed to be installed.
Opened a project, compiled it, ran the unit tests, everything worked fine. No major issues found
Update:
Yesterday my right click context menu stopped working(ie. it didn’t appear) in the package explorer after cmd-tabbing back and forth between VMWare and FB 4.5.
After closing and reopening package explorer it started working again….
FDT 4:
Opened a project, compiled it. No issues found
STS – SpringSource Toolkit
Opened a Groovy project and compiled it. No issues found
IntelliJ IDEA 10
Opened a Maven project, updated dependencies, compiled it. No issues found
Forklift – No issues found
Adobe Fireworks CS5
Opened a project, exported the image slices. No issues found
VMWare Fusion
Started a Fedora Core Image. No issues found
Update: After restarting the computer, I got the following error message in VMWare:VMWare Fusion cannot connect to the virtual machine. Make sure you have rights to run the program and to access all directories it uses and rights to access all directories for temporary files.
VMWare Fusion cannot connect to the virtual machine. Make sure you have rights to run the program and to access all directories it uses and rights to access all directories for temporary files.

After some googling I found 2 possible solutions:
1. chmod all vmware image files to 777 – it didn’t work for me
2. reinstall VMWare – which introduced a new error:VMware Fusion can’t be installed on this computer. Sorry, VMware Fusion can only be installed on Macs with Intel processors.

Launchbar - No issues found
Visor
Didn’t work at all. I updated to TotalTerminal, it worked fine.
TotalTerminal – No issues found
TextWrangler – No issues found
Maya 2009 – No issues found
Opened a project, navigated around, did a quick software render and a mental ray render, everything worked fine.
Little Snitch – Stopped working without any warning.
Upgraded to the latest version and it started working again.
Pretty good start.
Now I have ugly springy elastic scrollbars and Launchpad that turns my macbook pro into a 15″ iPhone….
Oh, and I can resize windows from all 4 corners…. which is really handy because the maximise button still doesn’t maximise anything….

Have you tried to hold option key while pressing maximize button?
I just tried Shift, Fn, Ctrl, alt and cmd… none of them worked
Finder “maximises” to an arbitrary width and height.
So far the only app that maximises to the full viewport area is Firefox…
Yeah, Finder and Safari won’t maximize this way. Though this solution works for most of other apps for me (Mail, iTunes, Adobe apps).
Anyway, how’s Flash Builder 4.5 working in Lion for everyday work so far? I’m thinking about upgrading to Lion, but possible issues with FB still draws me back. Don’t wont to go back to TextMate again for AS 3.0
Go for it, it’s working fine for me. I used it over the weekend and I haven’t run into any issues so far.
Cool, thanks!
The (+) button has never meant “maximize” on the Mac. It’s always been “zoom” (and the zoom button existed before Windows 95, so it actually predates the entire concept of “maximizing” a window). As a result, most Mac users expect the current window to zoom to an ideal size that accomodates the contents of the window (after all, what’s the point of using separate windows if you can only see one at a time?).
The new full screen mode in Lion is Apple’s answer to people who want the current window to use the entire display. As such, it would make even less sense now to redefine the zoom button to mean “maximize”. IMO, apps that resize to use the entire display when the (+) is clicked are exhibiting the wrong behavior for the Mac platform, based on the misunderstanding that (+) means “maximize”. I.e. Firefox is the one that does it wrong. Hopefully Firefox will adopt the new full screen button and correct the wrong behavior of the zoom button.
Hi Jason, thanks for your comment!
Well, even if it’s Zoom and not Maximise, it has a very ambiguous behaviour.
Here’s an example:
I’ve got a Finder window open. I want to make it bigger, so I press the ‘Zoom’ button.
Instead of zooming in, sometimes it makes the window even smaller!
If you click on it again, it returns to the previous window size.
Luckily there are apps out there that make the ‘Zoom’ button more usable:
